Have you ever needed to take a trip when your dog couldn’t come? Had an emergency when you couldn’t walk your dog? Do you have a job that requires you to be gone for more than 6 hours? Just need a break sometimes from the responsibility?
Most people probably will fall into this category at some point. Having a dog sitter on board and ready to support you and your dogs is important when you have animals in your life.
Here are some reasons to establish a relationship with a pet sitter.

Having someone that you can count on, that you can trust with your precious babies and your home, someone your dogs know, love and trust is very comforting. Having someone who knows your dog and their unique personality, needs and can provide a personalized service that no one else can.
Having a dog sitter on board is part of your support team, your pet care team. With their knowledge and experience, they can provide guidance, information, awareness, and recommendations if needed to support you in providing the best life for your furbaby.
Just like you get established with a vet for your pets lifelong care, I believe establishing a relationship with a pet sitter is essential. In fact, they sometimes can be the bridge between your pet and the vet because they often have basic knowledge of pet health, have a close relationship with your pets, can know what is normal behavior for them or not and can suggest when it might be time to get expert help.
Local sitters can also be well networked in the community and have connections for pet related service providers.
Lastly, your animals are social creatures and typically love having people and other dogs in their lives. I believe this connection is essential for their wellbeing just as it is for us humans.
Why you should start now.
Sometimes it's hard to find a sitter that is a great match for your family and it takes time to connect, interview, find availability and build a relationship.
For example, if your dog needs a walk everyday, they may require time to bond with the sitter before feeling comfortable to go on a walk with them alone.
If your dog is protective over you and your home, its important to give them time to build trust with your sitter before leaving them alone.
So start the process early and be aware that a few pet sitting visits may be needed before your trip for your dog to build that trust and be ok with a stranger in the house.
Why your DOG wants a sitter.
Don't take it personal… but dogs like attention and sometimes with busy schedules it can be hard to walk your dog, play with them, snuggle them and give them all the attention they need.
Giving your dog the attention they need is kind of a dog sitters thing. That is what they do, when the sitter is visiting, its all about THEM.
If you have a beloved pet in your life, please take the time now to connect with a pet sitter in your area. Maybe planning a monthly visit to keep them involved and familiar with your pet. This way you are prepared if you ever have an emergency and can't walk your dog or need to leave out of town last minute.
